Question:

Renting a hotel room for 2, but having 4 stay in it?

Me and some friends, all 18 and 19, are going to be spending Saturday night in downtown Toronto and will be staying at one of the hotels, probably the Strathcona.

Now I'm an honest guy and hate doing stuff like this, but the rooms are so damned expensive everywhere in the city that they want to book a room that has a limit of 2 adults and have all 4 of us stay in there, sneaking the other 2 in.

I don't really agree with it because the room will be rented in my name using my credit card probably, and I am worried that if they were to find out, I would get charged even more which would suck.

What could they do if they found 4 of us in a room with a limit of 2 adults?

Any suggestions on how to avoid being found?

  1. Try and keep the noise down and sneak your friends in.  Its that simple.

  2. Most hotels will let you have four; you just have to pay about $10 extra per person per night.  Call (anonymously) before you get there and ask to be sure; that way, you won't feel guilty for nothing!

  3. As long as you aren't partying making too much noise and trashing the place and it isn't a dozen people there - then they probably wont find out, and if they did find only 4 people there - then they are likely to charge you 2x the extra person fee.    I have seen some hotels who have a regular problem have signs that say an extra $50 fee if caught, but those are rare, and I get the feeling places that have trouble with parties and/or hookers. So look for the fine print.   Again, if you are a good/polite hotel customer, you should work out fine.

I don't like to do it either, but have had people crash from time to time for a hotel stay.

  4. It's perfectly fine as long as the four of you wouldn't mind sleeping in you're car once they find out about your fraud. The cleaning people have a way of telling when "two" people are actually four in a room.

  5. The hotel I work in, will kick the other people out if we do find that there are too many people in the room.

I'm young and broke as well, and I know what you are saying, so I tell you this:

Have no idea what the hotel is you're staying at, but in my hotel you would have to be back at the hotel before 11pm. Because that's when we lock the doors and start checking everyone walking into the hotel. Therefore you wouldn't be able to sneak in at night.

And be quiet!! Make sure you do not get any noise complaints so the staff will come up to your room.

Just don't try this at my hotel ;)

Decsmommy - I work in a 4-star hotel in the UK. All hotels in the area locks the doors at night. It's for the safety of our guests. It's just different in different places I guess.

  6. Dollars to donuts, you'll get caught and be charged for extra people. If you let them know then either they'll refuse or charge you for extra cots if they have them.

The charge usually covers extra towels and soaps, etc. so it may be worth it unless you like to use soggy towels.

They have legal occupancy guidelines to follow and they aren't willing to compromise their business if it means violating safety regulations. Decent places condemn those wanting to avoid paying for more space/facilities because they automatically assume those people are noisy, careless, inconsiderate, troublemakers.

  7. there is a side door to every hotel.. and there is no charge if people come visit.. trust me you will be fine.. just think of it as the gas prices are forcing you to sneak people in!

  8. Me and three other girls rented a 2-person room... no biggie.

  9. Kayla - what kind of hotel do you work in that locks the outside doors and checks people? I've travelled around the world and never heard of this! Sounds kind of sketchy! Maybe a hostel, but not a proper hotel.

As long as you are quiet and don't disturb anyone you won't be caught. There are usually extra towels at most hotels anyway, so you shouldn't have to worry about that. Make sure you put the 'do not disturb sign' on the door so the maid doesn't walk in on you at 7am. And if you do get caught in the morning, just say the extra guys came over to visit and got too drunk to drive home late at night. Seriously, how would the hotel ever know?
