What kind of paperwork should I expect to be involved with renting the apartment? what is the best way to pay rent every month ( do I need to set up a french bank account)?

I will be a student living in paris and I need as much information as possible before contacting a landlord.

  1. You have my sympathy. You are about to be very annoyed and harassed.

The owner will almost certainly require a proof that your income is sufficient to pay the rent (classically, three months of salary slips showing that the rent would not represent more than 30% of your income) Since you are a student,  a formal duly signed guarantee from your parents that they will be responsible for the rent. You'll also need to show your visa and probably proof that you are a legitimate student.

A french bank account is a good idea. The landlord will probably require a cash deposit ("dépot de garantie") of generally 3 months rent.

You will likely need an insurance contract ("assurance habitation") and be able to provide a copy to the landlord.

Oh, and when you do find a place, make sure to complete an "état des lieux", a document which lists in minute detail the condition of the apartment before you move in.
