Repacking yz125 muffler? what to clean core with?

Question

what do i clean the core (the metal tube with holes in it which the packing surrounds) with? some say a wire brush, but it doesn't get all the black off. can i use a cleaner?

use carbu clean, it is for cleaning carbon build up, then scrub it.
