Repair of a 1970s HP calculator: HP 27

Question

I bought this one in college and would like to keep it working.  When using it on a fully charged battery the display (seemingly randomly) displays blinking digits (zeroes?) across the display and then goes blank.  I have purchased two replacement batteries for it, but that has not solved the problem.  Help me keep this old lady going!  Thanks.
