Question:

Reparations for african americans?

1) How to break the vicious cycle of poverty caused by the oppression of african americans back in the day? Maybe on way is reparations in the form of free college for all black kids for the next 10 yrs?

#2) But who will pay for this? Most likely people who had nothing to do with these attrocities to begin with.

The native americans have been granted reservations, the jewish people were given a whole country.

I personally believe that this would help to a certain extent but there also needs to be a shift in the "blame someone else for my misfortune" attitude.

What does everyone think?

  1. 1.) - I think reparations are long overdue, should've been given long ago but disagree w/ the college idea

2.) - Isn't that how it is anyway? Folk paying through taxes for services they would never use in a million years (welfare, public schools

I think the whole idea that there is serious "blame someone else for my misfortune" attitude is as lie so I disagree; that is a mistake many Americans (including blacks) make when they go off on their Bill Cosby tirade

  2. Consider the victims and families of violent crimes perpretrated by blacks...should they have to pay or do they get a pass.  If I were the parent of Channon CHristian or Christopher Newsome I would see this country destroyed before I paid one goddamn cent to "black" people.  What about those descendents of the people that came over in the great migration?  They cam after slavery and were very poor for the most part, will they pay?

They can expect to get nothing, because nothing is what they deserve other than the same chance that everyone has to make it.

  3. Throwing money at a problem never helps.  You can't put a monetary value on a life.  All the people involved in slavery - both the victims and the perpetrators - are dead.  That would be like you throwing me in jail because my dead great-grandpa robbed from your dead great-grandpa.  How is that justice?  Racism is alive because a few stubborn people on BOTH sides will not let it go.  College is not a guarantee for a great future anyway.  Plenty of self-made millionaires do not have degrees and plenty of people with degrees are not terribly intelligent.  Plus, you will then have a long line of every other minority demanding their free college.  I've also heard it said that whites will not be the majority in another 50 years.  So then what?  Will there be an NAAWP?  Life is what you make of it.  Nobody's handed me a darn thing.  We are living paycheck to paycheck like everyone else.  I couldn't afford college so I didn't get to go.  I'm dealing with it.  My husband works in a factory.  He deals with it.  Life is not supposed to be easy.  It's like the song says, If you're not breaking a sweat, you're not alive.... or something like that.

  4. Boy you sounds racist!  They need to not allow racists towns segregate the black people from the white.  Where I live we have a section of town that looks like apartheid.  The problem is that people are still racists and treat African Americans as if they are inferior beings.

  5. But the "next ten years" wouldn't cut it.

If anything, maybe the government and/or organizations (or some of the schools themselves!) can offer up some great scholarships, more than what there is now, and reach out to the more disadvantaged kids to mentor and encourage them to reach for college.

That way, there is more dignity in it, the help doesn't need to end, there is fewer complaints of it being "unfair" by other groups, and those who really need it get it. Because not all black kids are disadvantaged, there are plenty of folks that are average middle class like everyone else and a percent that come from a rich family and can afford their own education, so the help should go to the ones that have the need.

"Granted reservations" means nothing when it was their own ancestral lands in the first place and even then it was the crappy parts the whites figured they could do without.

  6. I think that would actually break some discrimination laws and they would feel like it was charity (which it would be), and I think it would cause riots

  7. Well, if we were going to give some compensation for the freed slaves, we should have done it a long time ago when they were first freed. Someone had a really good idea back in the day to give every freed black man ten acres and a mule to get started off.

Right now, I would say that there should be more groups that promote education for african americans. There are already plenty of scholarships and financial aid you can get if you have good grades or your parents don't have enough money, but most high school students don't know about all of this. If there were some more awareness about it, then more of these kids could go to college, get higher paying jobs, end the whole bad cycle.

  8. its not the question you ask but how you ask it. And maybe the rest of the world laughs at yall because some(not all) of you are the most racist set of ppl in the world. I think you gatta be clearer with how you ask your questions. About what you said about native americans getting reservations in case you didnt know they were in america first. i think they would agree that they got the worst parts of the country. The reason why african americans need help is in most cases its the only way they can escape poverty.

  9. Affirmative action.

African Americans, as well as Hispanic/Mexican Americans are already granted greater gifts in education such as "all black schools", scholarships, all sorts of things.

Personally, I am not going to pay for somebody to go to school just because of the color of their skin.

If you WANT something, WORK for it.

Everybody has their problems. Yes, A vast majority of Americans are racist, but not all. You can't use your race/ethnicity as a crutch. Sometimes you have to work 2x harder than everybody else.

get over it, life isn't fair. :) This is my opinion.

  10. The U.S. IS NOT mostly a nation of racist and haters....for Chr*sts sake a half black man could almost become president and the person who posted the comment MOST Americans are racist needs to get out more often: A black or even half black man wouldn't make it as far as Obama in any other 1st world nation oand would have a b*****d of a time in most Latin countries where there's tremendous racism.

"Can Food Stamps, Free apartments, section 8, paid day care, hiring quotas, affirmative action, college funds,WIC, it never ends. There's your reparations. We had nothing to do with them coming here, that was done by slave traders, and some plantation owners.Who's stopping them from going back?Welfare turns people into parasites."

The above sums it up well.

Ridiculous........everybody has some legit gripe from the past myself included. Part of the problem that exists among African Americans today: Extremely high single parent home, no father-responsible adult male, pathologically high violent crime rate (in my city, no lie this is an absolute fact) most murders are committed by young black men, etcetera........much of this is directly and indirectly the result of 40 plus years of social policies that reward folks for bad behavior; overcoming a "guilt" complex (this is behind much of the social experiemntaion of the past 40 plus years) by patronizing people and holding them to a lower standard than others because, well, they can't help themselves, has created the nasty problems we have today.

As for the rest of the world (at least the 1st world like Europe, Canada,a few others) they have a much smaller racial minority population than the U.S. The UK is still roughly 90% white, France slightly less, Canada is overwhelmingly white...the U.S has a black population alone of 12%, with a huge illegal population and rapidly growing Asian population. The U.S. is BY FAR the most diverse 1st world nation on Earth and others who ridicule us need to walk in our shoes or shut up.

  11. No amount of money can repay what was done to those people who suffered through that horrible instituation of slavery.

No amount of money can repay of the lives ex-slaves had to live during reconstruction.

No amount of money can repay the oppression, humiliiation, and terror that Blacks had to endure during the Jim Crow Era, which only ended (on the surface) a little over 40 years ago.

The 40 acres and mule that the ex-slaves were promised but never recieved wouldn't have been enough. How do you put a monetary value to kidnapping a teenage boy or girl, shackling and branding them, putting them in dungeons in slave forts, shipping them of to a foreign land, beating them, selling them or their children away from their families and continuing to do so for hundreds of years. How in the world do you put a price tag on that.

    KEEP IT......
