for all those who doubt my intentions, i'm trying to help women keep safe and reduce their chances of being raped, i am NOT laying blame on the victim.

so, how can we, as women, protect ourselves?

  1. Carry a brick with you, all the time.

  2. Carry mace, a 45 magnum, and a ball buster.  Never think your safe ladies, because your not.  Have common sense, and never go out alone at night.

  3. Women can do nothing, it's not about what women 'do'...... And there is no 'bandaid solution'.

It's all about the sick mind of the perpetrator.... What can we do to fix those sicko's?

  4. They can be responsible citizens and be capable of using the legally obtained and licensed concealed firearm they carry.

  5. Learn martial arts, carry a gun, go out in groups, carry mace, a  personal alarm etc.

  6. Women should learn the art of self-defense. Avoid risky situations and prevent it before happening. When facing the rapist, they should attack the rapist's vulnerable spots such as the balls and eyes.

Also, wear the anti-rape condom to protect yourself from the worst. The condom looks something like this: its has metal teeth that can stab and tear into the p***s, and in the process disabling the p***s.

The key is: Be strong and act strong. Destroy the rapist psychologically, so he will behave better next time. Disable the rapist physically, so even if he wants to rape next time he is physically unable to.

Also, build women's support and rights networks. Educate the public about the evils of rape.

For more infomation about the anti-rape condom, here is the link:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-rape_c...

    http://www.antirape.co.za/

If it's not on the market you can make yourself one. Don't worry about the criticisms against the anti-rape condom. IT"S TIME THAT WOMEN STOP BEING SOFT AND SHOW THEIR HARD GIRL POWER!

    Good luck! :)

  7. take self defense classes

    carry mace or tazer

    dont walk alone

dont accept drinks or food from people you dont know

dont get so drunk that you cant walk or talk probably (it amazes me how many women on a Saturday night i see in town we cant walk without their friends holding them up)

dont go to areas at night that are known to be real dodgy

trust your gut if something dosent feel right then you are most likely right

  8. I would say when going to a party, a woman should watch her drinks, pour her own or watch them being poured. Don't leave them unattended and of course drink alcohol in moderation.

Be a little selective about male company. Don't leave places with strangers. Have  first dates in public places. This is also a good way to avoid other kinds of trouble, not just rape.

If a man starts acting aggressive towards her about s*x or anything else,  she should distance herself from him. Don't try to save the encounter or talk him out of anything. Just utter a firm "No!" and leave.

But for heaven's sake! If she feels that refusal or fighting would put her life in danger after a certain point, let the rape occur and then seek out help and the law. Rape is horrible but not as bad as getting killed.

  9. 1 - don't get drunk.

#2 - don't be alone with somebody you don't know very well.

#3 - use common sense when out alone.

  10. Don't hang out with anyone that you think has the potential to rape someone, don't walk around anywhere alone after dark, don't get p**s drunk at parties.

  11. I can't stress the importance of listening to your instincts and trusting vibes!

  12. My current girlfriend is afraid of guns, so I gave her some bear spray.  Bear spray is stronger than police mace and easier to get.  It's designed to repel bear attacks.  It is illegal to spray it in someone's eyes because it WILL cause blindness.  However, I'd like to meet the rapist who has the balls to try to sue someone he attacked.  And if I find that guy, I'd like to meet the jury who whould convict a woman for defending herself.

  13. Be smart is the best thing we can do for ourselves.

    Go with your instinct

    Be on your guard

Remember you can be friendly without giving out every detail of your life.

    Travel with friends whenever possible

This link provides some very good suggestions.

  14. We could all stay indoors and wear burkas, but life would be boring and not really worth living.

    Edit

Perhaps if men can't control themselves then all MEN should be forced to stay indoors at night.

    Edit

"sam: isn't your safety more important than your freedom of expression? not getting drunk and not going out alone at night sounds sensible to me."

If we thought like this about everything, you wouldn't even cross a busy road for fear of being run over. I can't live life like that, but if you want to that's your call. Do you think men should stop going out at night by themselves too?

Not getting drunk? Admittedly now I'm older I don't get as drunk :-) but I happen to like drinking and socialising.

Not going out at night alone? Well, how would I get back from work or university? How would I go to evening classes? What if I need something from the shops? Shouldn't I go and visit friends after dark? Do you start to see how silly this sounds?

  15. You should do the same thing us guys do to protect ourselves from the stupid actions of other people.

For example: Many guys avoid going to roudy-type clubs because we know if we go, it raises chances of some idiot starting a fight with us. That could lead to jail, crippled for life, or senseless death.

Women should avoid going to shadey-type clubs where the atmosphere has shadey guys either in or lingering around the place that could potentially have intent to rape you. That could lead to rape, and wanted pregnancy and disease on top of that.

You can't avoid all problems that happen, but you can do best to narrow the chances. Both men and women.

EDIT: The more I read peoples answers, the more it seems that it would all be better to just seperate men from women entirely to different continents. That would end 99% of problems of rape. Then women can feel free to enjoy their freedom of expression as dramatically as they want, anywhere they want without worrying about rape.

  16. Apparently, according to you:

We are to go to work and come home in daylight hours.

We are to be dressed at all times from our ankles to our collar bones in loose fitting drab attire.

    We are never to flirt.

We are not to joke with men and should probably avert our eyes when speaking with them.

We are not to go out to dinner, dancing, or ever have a drink.

We are not to wear make-up or get our hair done.

We are only to go out when not alone.

Or we can take lessons and get a carry permit!  And if attacked can aim for his balls.

    EDIT:

Long ago when a wise lady was president of Israel there were a rash of rapes at night.  Her top generals and advisors said  "we must have a curfew for women" .    President Golda Meir said "why should the women have a curfew, its the men who are doing the raping".    If it is so unsafe for us to be out at night. The maybe others need to be restricted not us.  For a woman not to go out at night is so severe a limitation of her lifestyle it is ridiculous.

  17. put pepper spray in your v****a

  18. you could walk around wearing a strap on, that may make the jackass think twice.

  19. Many good answers, but I just wanted to add the following:

Rape has been with us since the dawn of time.  For a long time people blamed the victim.  Today we instruct women on how to protect themselves.

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT WHY MEN DO IT???

  20. Is the same about other crimes, like kidnapping or be robbed, people have to keep an alert mood, on dangerous situations.

The last year I visited an organization which teaches little boys and girls to protect themselves from abuse. I think is not only for young girls, but all people have to learn how protect themselves.

  21. Self-defense training, not walking alone at night, buddy system etc.

It still does somewhat place the victim at blame, unfortunately.  But it is (as much as it sucks) unrealistic and idealistic to believe that we live in a society that isn't a danger..

It's why I commend those "radical" feminists for "Take Back The Night" marches.  It isn't fair that women have to go to these measures to protect ourselves from being raped and men don't.

To truly take back the night, women would have to constantly put themselves in dangerous and vulnerable situations and put themselves at risk.

I'm all for empowerment, But I'd rather have my safety than my principals.

  22. There was a rapist loose on my campus once.  The advice to women was to travel in groups, or with a male escort which we were always happy to provide, some women would walk down the center of a street, not on the sidewalk at all.  Having a cell phone preprogrammed for police would help, there are portable alarms you can carry, and you can take a judo or karate self defense course.  Some personal weapons are permitted, but some are illegal.

  23. Some things you can do to help make women less vulnerable to rapists:

    * Demand adequate lighting in all public areas of your suburb, town or educational institution. Demand the right for all citizens to walk the streets they pay for without fear of personal assault, mugging or other forms of attack.

    * Fight for laws which clarify 'consent' and make sure these are widely publicised.

    * Boycott products advertised on media programmes which promote 'blame the victim' mentality.

    * Write to advertisers and tell them why you are no longer purchasing their product, and explain exactly how the media personality, programme or organisation promotes 'blame the victim' mentality.

    * Demand s*x education class level education about the nature of rape and make it easy and safe for those who feel they may be potential rapists to seek help rather than give in to their fantasies of control and feelings of inadequacy.

    * Demand educational programmes to ensure that law enforcement officers at all levels act within the law and support the intent of sexual assault legislation without excuses or prevarications.

    * In your personal life, don't accept blame the victim excuses, even in passing conversation.

    * Join an organisation which works to support and empower rape victims.

    * Work with men's groups which promote anti-violence and which support male victims of rape.

It's always easier (and cheaper!) to say victims should stay home, stay sober and stay covered up.

Unfortunately, that ignores the fact that many, perhaps most, rape victims ARE at home, sober and covered up when they are raped. And that many are elderly women, tiny children and men.

Telling the victims that they can prevent rapists acting on their choice to rape is just perpetuating one more set of rape myths, and actually works against public safety.

    Cheers :-)

  24. Not going out alone at night seems sensible to you?  Not only is that silly, it is impractical.  How exactly might all of us women, say like those that work, or take classes, or maybe want to meet up with friends and go out or take in a movie or go shopping or whatever, not 'go out alone at night'?  Why should women have to refrain from going out alone?  That type of 'precaution is not only impractical but it also surrenders to those that would do us violence.  Most men are not rapists and I think most men would find the idea that women shouldn't go outside at night alone as ridiculous as most women will.

I was raped 4 years ago, it happened at night, but I will be damned if I'm going to let the fear of rape take away my freedom to function like a fully independent member of society.

  25. The same things that men can do to make themselves less vulnerable to rapists.

It's really simple, are you ready for it?

    DON'T DO STUPID ****!!!

Don't put yourself in risky situations with people you don't know. Don't walk alone late at night in an unfamiliar neighborhood. Don't drink it if you didn't buy it. Carry personal protection (a gun, a knife, pepper spray).

Use a little goddamn common sense and awareness of your personal surroundings.

Yes, cars are still stolen with alarms and locks. But not nearly as often.

  26. lots of interesting answers.  i believe many rapes happen when women/men  are alone, so i guess great care should be taken if that situation arises.

apart from all suggestions, is there evidence of a database collating the circumstances of the crime, the perpetrator and the victim?   might be an answer in there to' identify and treat' the offender before he rapes.

society should take the greater responsibility because the s*x industry is worth millions of pounds and television and other media promote the business in all its guises. that has got to have an effect on men, the lovely ones and the perverts.

perhaps we need to re-establish some moral boundaries generally.

  27. Most rape is a crime of violence, not of sexual desire: the more hurt a woman suffers the better the rapist likes it.

When women (and men) can learn that being raped says no more about a woman than being beaten up says about a man, and important part of the rapists' pleasure will disappear.
