Replace water pump impeller on my 1986 Johnson 90 hp outboard.?

I want to replace the water pump impeller but don't know where to seperate the gear change shift rod to enable me to drop the gearcase lower unit. Hope someone out there can help.

  1. I know that on my 1973 85 hp Johnson, I was able to disconnect it from right under the front of the power head. When I dropped the lower unit, I recall two coolant tubes and the long rod. I know there have been design changes but do not know how much they changed in 13 years.


  2. Either below the power head in front under the carbs or some have a plate on the side of the exhaust housing held on with two screws, then behind that is a brass coupler, only remove the lower s***w if the latter is applicable.

    P.S. make sure the water tubes are in place on reassembly.

  3. Pull your engine cover. look for the shift rod going from your shift cable to the lower end . You  may need to shift it to find this . There will be a simple connection. Make sure to have it in neutral when you take it apart. Take note of the possion of the two rods and put them back in the same spot. Try marking them.
