  1. That's not good.   Call a licensed electrician ASAP.   Sounds like a potential fire hazard.


  2. If you have installed CFL bulbs, standard dimmers will cause this. If you do have CFL bulbs, buy a dimmer that specifically says that it is rated for fluorescent or CFL bulbs.

  3. That does not sound good at all.  I've never heard of a properly operating dimmer getting noticeably hot.  I'd replace, and not with the same brand.

  4. Add up all the bulbs to see how many watts the dimmer is controlling.  If they all add up to more that the dimmer is rated at, it will cause the dimmer to heat up.  It will also get very warm if it is right at the maximum wattage.
