Question:

Replaced wall outlet but now ceiling light doesn't work?

I changed my wall outlet to a white model and now the light in my ceiling fan doesn't turn on like it used to before. The fan itself works but the light only turns on when I have something plugged into the bottom part of the outlet. I'm not sure of the wiring in my house but how can I fix this?

I have tried using a different outlet and rewiring the outlet.

  1. I'm not experienced at this at all but it sounds like you need a multi-switch to get it to work.

  2. Your wiring to the plug is wrong if your light works when you plug something in. Best to call someone.

  3. Sorry, but it sounds like you need to find a better qualified person to look at your outlet's wiring.  If you have worked on it twice and it still doesn't work, you may be working in an area that could get you injured.
