Question:

Replacing BT main cable?

The BT telephone cable which runs from the main terminal outside my house to the internal main socket is about 25 years old and is starting to deteriorate. An intermittent crackling can be heard on the line from time to time, which causes my broadband to lose connection. BT have checked the line from the exchange to the terminal outside my house and say that it is fine. If an engineer enters the house to check the cable I may be charged if he cannot find a fault -- this is highly likely -- as the problem is stop start, rather than constant. I'd like to replace the cable myself -- is this possible / easy? If so what would I need to buy, are there any websites that explain the proceedure step by step?

  2. There is information on page 5 of the BTphone book on how to check if the problem is yours or BT's/Openreach's. If you don't have a socket as illustrated, then you are unable to disconnect any extensions( if you have any).If you do, plug a know working good phone into the test socket, if the noise/crackle is still there then the problem is outside and you shouldn't be charged. You are not allowed to change any wiring before your 1st socket. It's a common problem with external wiring of that age to start deteriorating, rusty spots are a good indication. If you changed it yourself, and a further problem occured, you could be charged to bring the wiring up to standard. Leave it to the experts.
