Question:

Replacing Fishing Line?

I have had some spiderwire braided line on my reel for about 2-3 yrs. It seems like it is starting to feel "dry" and is fraying at the ends more easily. Should I replace it?

  1. if it feels dry tug on it about 10 times and if you feel it brank CHANGE IT  or if it feels weak change it so if you some how hook in to a big 40 lb fish it will not get a way and if you do not know how to string braided go to a fishing shop its a little harder to string then mono and if you do not do it right you are out of 15-30 dollars depending on how much you brought it for so hope this helps you. and good luck

  2. Yes, although it should still be OK for a few trips i wouldn't risk it, replace it with some new braid it will cast better and have full breaking strain, also if your braid has been left in strong UV light it could be damaged. There are various good brands out there to try such as power pro, berkley, stren.

  3. Oh yeah, if you fish as much as i do (about every weekend) then you will need to replace the line about every 2 months maybe less.

  4. Since you don't go fishing that much, you wouldn't have to change it as much as the average person does, but if it is feeling dry and fraying at the ends then you DEFINITELY need to replace it before going out again.

If it were me, I would be changing mine right before that big Canada trip every year to be sure that I had strong line, but if that is the only trip you do all year, you might could get away with doing it every two years. The thing is though, as many hours as it sounds like you spend out there during those two weeks, it's likely it gets a lot of abrasions and probably has just as much chance of rotting after sitting for a while. So changing it every year may not be a bad idea. Wouldn't want to lose that BIG fish because of a line snap.

Have fun! Hope you catch a BIG one!!!

  5. you as a fishing person goes is only as good as your equipment, line is what keeps you with the fish on..... I replace line on some reels three times a year, it depends on how often the ultra violet spectrum of light has gotten exposed to it, line decays ( strength where the knots are tied) faster in all forms of light ( worse even from artificial light (like in stores where its been sitting waiting for someone to buy it) get all your line from bass pro shops on line

I swear ( trick #113) the line at bass proshops on line is less than two months old.

  6. I work for the department of wildlife and I tell people to replace it once a year depending on how often you go, but any cuts in the line from scraping against rocks and things and weathering can hurt the line so go ahead and replace it.

  7. You probably should i try to make a habit of changing mine every spring but i think its suppose to be good for a few years but i'd hate to let a big one get away because i had rotten line.

  8. you should replace the line at least once a year u seem to be going for big fish use a 15 lb test line or more its not fun when your line breaks but don't use a 30lb test line unless your going for huge fish u can't then cast the line too far
