Replacing a car engine

First off what is the CHEAPEST way to replace a car engine, saying that you absolutely have to?

ex. a used engine, doing it with a mechanic savy friend....

now this may be a stupid ques. too but im not very familiar with car parts and whatnot but when replacing an engine does it have to be the same exact kind that is already in there. ... like could you take a engine out of a buick and put it in a kia? That might be a stupid ques. but like i said i really have no clue, thanks!

  1. i would get a used low milage engine. some junk yards will let you heer it run. it don,t have to be out of the same car, some engines are interchangeable.

  2. The best way to replace a engine is to go to a junkyard and have them to replace it for you. My co-worker Oscar had a truck build up from scratch in a junkyard and it is one of the baddest trucks in las vegas. look dude it would be a lot cheaper to have it rebuild instead of replacing it

  3. Yep, The cheapest way is the example you gave.

And regarding fitting a Buik engine to a Kia.. I dont know what car models/engine type/layout or size but I'd have an educated guess at it being nearly impossible or at least not possible without extensive and costly modifications to your car Im afraid. Best going for an exact replacement of the same engine you already have, the wiring, pipes and ancilaries are all designed for this engine.

  4. with limeted knoledge of cars i wouldnt try to do it your self but with modifacations any drive train could be placed in almost any car.  i would stick to an engine that was stock in the car or one that was in the same family. buy a CHILTONS manual and the cars listed with yours should be a sutable donar i would try to have a licenced mechanic help ( i got screwed tying to have a "mechanic friend" put my engine in my used car and it hasnt been right since)

    GOOD LUCK!

  5. Go to car-part.com to find out what other engines are "bolt ins".

The cheapest way is to do it yourself (SOBER)! Booze causes mistakes.

    A friend would be great.

Plan on at least renting an engine hoist.

Putting in different engine then a direct bolt in will not only increase cost but it will also increase the odds of failure.

  6. Well, it's not stupid if you don't know. You can put any engine in any car. It can be messy and expensive as well as complicated and disappointing when it's all done. You want to find the exact engine or one that is absolutely known to fit with no modification. That will be the least hassle in many ways. Used engines are always risky though. The replacement can be as bad or worse than the original. If the seller can give some assurance as to the engine, it's better than nothing. You want a factory remanufactured  engine if you can afford it. It may be cheaper in the long run.
