Replacing a head unit in a mazda?

i have a 1999 mazda 626 the head unit i just have no idea how to take out the old stereo

i just need some advice on how to take it out someone said im going to have to remove everything around it? then put it back together... there has to be an easier way

also someone said there is a special tool for a mazda... what is this tool

i have everything else tho the unit the wiring harnesses

  1. on each side of the radio there are thin covers that come off. behined that are the 4 holes that you need the tools for but if you don't have that get a  wire clothes  hanger and cut  it into  about 4     6 inch  pieces. you place each one of these into the holes witch releases the head unit. then wiggle the head unit out but don't pull too hard you could damage the wire harness. good luck.  you can also buy a haynes manual that will show you how.


  2. yeah your gonna have to take everything around it off.. and put it all back when ur done.

  3. I dont think there any speical tool. Some parts are snap on and look for hidden s***w aound center radio cover or  inside ash tray.

  4. If you look very closely at the left and right edges of your radio, you'll see that there are small plastic strips there that can be pried off.  Underneath you'll find two small holes on each side.  These are made for Ford-style radio removal tools, like this:  http://www.logjamelectronics.com/metra86...  You can find these at many auto parts or car audio stores.
