Question:

Replacing an engine head gasket?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

I asked a question recently about my honda xr200 1987 leaking oil out of the engine when its running, and I figure checking to see if the head gasket is worn/damaged is a good place to start (unless someone has a better idea).

Is it hard to replace a head gasket? I've never done this kind of thing before, and I don't want to go into not having a clue what I'm doing and break something.

Any advice/tips involving this type of repair are appreciated.. Thanks

  1. GB's right;  get a manual.  Taking off a head isn't that hard, but it's a whole lot easier if you know what steps to take, instead of figuring out as you go along.

  2. if it's leaking oil try checking your valve cover gaskets first doing a head-gasket can be a lot of work and would be leaking anti-freeze.

  3. GB is correct.

    Get a manual ASAP.

Once you see what is involved, you can decide your fate.

Most dealerships will not take in bikes old as yours.

Now go drink a beer and relax

  4. The engine must be removed from the frame to remove the cylinder head.

It might be a good idea to purchase a service manual.

You never would have known that without a manual.

  5. It would be best to determine exactly where the oil is leaking from before you go tearing into the motor. Easiest way is to carefully clean/degrease the engine then run it and check frequently to see where the oil is coming from. Another old trick is to dust the engine with baby powder, which will make the oil leak more evident. In the event that you do need to replace the head gasket do yourself a favor and buy a repair manual. The job is not difficult but it is critical that you get the cam timing correct, and set the cam chain tension correctly, otherwise you could end up bending valves. Good luck.

  6. download a free manual here & have a look..
