  1. If you are replacing a line in the ground, you need to use L copper

If using inside your home go with M copper,or look at using PEX, it is quite cheaper and juust as good.

All fittings are about the same,as for gas for a torch get MAPP gas (yellow bottle) it heats alot quicker than propane.

  2. I've always chosen type L it is a heavier wall thickness- much more resistant to abuse & corrosion. the fittings all seem to be "L" or even "k"  an even heavier wall thickness. propane would be fine- ample heat, relatively cheap. If you are going to do alot of this you may consider a prest-o-lite torch which uses air and acetylene.

  3. L always... most plumbers use mapp gas for soldering... it gets hotter than propane...

  4. Type L is for water M is for heat (m is thinner and not code approved for domestic water... same fittings.. get a mapp gas torch from home depot or wherever thats what i use.

  5. USA   i accidentally marked the answer by CLC as good.  That was a mistake on my part.  Exterior water line - use type K copper.  Interior domestic water pipe - type L.  Type M is usually used with baseboard heating systems.  Sweat with propane or MAPP gas.  Mapp burns hotter than propane, ergo the joints are heated faster for soldering.

Copper pipe and tubing is the same outside diameter for types K, L and M.  One fitting fit all types, you do not buy different fittings for K, L or M.

  6. YES,USE TYPE L BUT IF YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCED AT SWEATING PIPE YOU SHOULD START WITH PROPANE AS MAPP GAS HEAT IS HARDER TO CONTROL
