Question:

Replacing pantry shelves, how to get the rivets out??

I've got these Closetmaid shelves in my pantry that were there before we moved in. Now one of them has broken in the back, so we can't put anything heavy towards the back. But the thing is they are held on with some type of rivets, they are not Phillip's or flat-head screws, not hex bolts, they are these little round rivet looking bolts. How do I get those out?? Please, I hope I don't have to rip those out then repair the wall, there has to be another way.

  1. you will want to drill them out. Go slow as to ensure not additional damage occurs. They should come out fairly easily once you drill them all the way thru.

Remove the shelves that are damaged. I hope you know what your putting in there to replace it. If its another shelve. repair the holes if needed and secure new shelf inplace. Good luck.

  2. I have always used a small drill bit to drill the rivet out.  When the bit goes through the rivet will come off real easy.  Also if you own a multi tool such as Dremel or RotoZip they can also be used.

    Good luck with your project

  3. Our clips were held in by nails that came with the clips. They were pushed/hammered lightly in. If you disconnect the legs on the shelf  you should be able to lift the shelf up and out. Just replace the clip which is broken... move it a few inches if possible. Replacement clips are available in places like Home Depot Lowes  Walmart .When we replaced the clips   we used achored screws  and do not seem to be having a problem. Replace the shelf and reconnect the legs.  You are now ready to go.
