Replacing rearend, u-joint instead of flat plate?

im replacing rearend in a full size bronco, my rearend has a round flat plate the mounts to drive shaft w/ 4 screws, the one im replacing it w/has a u-joint, or what looks like 1 1/2 of a elbow, or yoke, can i just remove the u-joint and replace it with the flat plate to mount to my drive shaft with the large nut in the middle?

  1. you have a rear end out of a newer truck you could take apart a shaft, and you can buy just that part from frod and take it to a machine shop they have access to u-joints with diffrent sized cups
