Just start out in advance thanks for all the great answers I Will be receiving with this post. But a very general question. On a 1982 sea ray inboard 260 merc does the engine need to be pulled in order to replace the starter or can I get out it without doing that. If anyone here has replaced one if you could give me any tips or insight it would be greatly appreciated thanks again guys.

  1. No, you don't have to pull the engine, but as you've probably seen, it's an awkward job.  There are a couple tricks.  A stubby 3/8 drive air- impact makes this much easier. But, if you don't have that, several extensions may let  you work from the front of the engine. and ball swivels really help.  The 2 bolts go in vertically, so the amount of room you have is limited.  Then there's little room to swing the ratchet handle, but it's doable.
