Question:

Replacing toilet seat?

I know how, but:

I can not get the s***w/nut untwisted from under the bowl. Like the plastic one that holds it down in the back?

From what I can tell, it is encrusted in bathroom dirt. Maybe. Yes.

How can I get the nut/bolt dislodged?

  1. If the parts are plastic, you can soften them with a propane torch with no harm to the bowl. Be sure a window is open with a fan running in case things begin to smell.

  2. suggest that if it is a plastic nut like a lot of them are, squeeze the nut with a pair of vice grips and it should break,or at least hold as you unscrew from the top.Or I would melt the nut  with an electric soldering gun if the vice grip does not work.

  3. If you have (or can borrow) a Dremel tool, try that with a circular cutting blade.

  4. break it off with pliers, the new one should have new nuts

  5. Bathroom 'dirt', yuck.  Spray that sucker with a lubricant. Then, after some time, try it with a pair of channel locks and a big straight-slotted screwdriver.  Might help things, with the oil.  I'm cautious about trying to break the nut off.  You could slip and chip/crack the bowl or make the bowl shift so much that it starts leaking water from the wax seal every time you flush.  I might be over cautious, I dunno but I really hate changing wax rings and removing/ reinstalling bowl-to-floor bolts.
