Repo. Came VINs on car doesn't match, What now?

So, hard times money wise - I called the bank and was planning on doing a voluntary turn-in. So the guys come out and get the car. About ten mintues later they show back up and give me the keys and tell me that the VINs don't match with the finance company and that they can't do anything with that car - and that I've been paying for the wrong car and that I owe nothing for that car until and/or if I get the VINs corrected. So, what does this mean? I bought the car off-line about three years ago, it has a clean car-fax report, and came from a custom bodyworks dealer that is very reputable. Also, the car hasn't had insurance or a tag on it for about a year now and has been parked - and when they drove it back I noticed the tire was flat and they rode the rim all the way back, warping it badly - could they have just told me that because they did that? But either way, What should I do now? Do I have a free car? Will I still owe the bank what's left? Should I get a lawyer?

  1. I've gone through the same thing -- still a bit painful, here is the resource help me a lot.http://carinsurance.expertsupport.info/a...

  2. Pull out your contract, your registration and the VIN off the window plate. Now, check all three.

Post additional info when you compare the VIN's and we can go from there.

  3. i would talk to lawyer.

  4. I wouldn't rely an a thing the repo man said. He's not an expert on anything except how to legally steal cars.

The VIN is right there on the windshield. It's also right there on the financial contract you signed to get the loan. You need to contact the lender and get this thing figured out.

You don't get a free car.  Nobody is going to just ignore this issue and let you slide.  Regardless of the car that's in your driveway, the contract you signed is in default and you owe the money.

  5. I would get a lawyerfor sure,The repo man is there to get the car and if he don't get the car then he dosen't get paid.So you can count on it being the wrong vin# are he would have getten it..If this car was totaledAnd the body shop repaired it and put a different vin# on so they could sale it,THen you should have a good case in court,If the vin # has been changed for any reason and when they sold it to you ,they didn't tell you anything about it

  6. I would talk to the finance company first.  Bottom line is you borrowed money  for some car and now that you don't know where tat car is, it doesn't mean you don't owe the money no it any more.  The finance company will either want their money or the car and since you cant pay the money, you better get the car part figured out.
