REPORT: Americans Working For Rights Today

Here is your goal for this assignment:

• Write a report identifying groups working in the area of human rights

Even though the Revolutionary War officially ended with the Peace Treaty of 1783, the

battle for human rights has not ended. The Civil War was fought to determine what rights

the states have in a democratic republic and to win freedom for the black slaves. Even today, people in the United States are still working to protect their rights.

Using the newspaper, some news magazines, or the Internet, learn which groups of people are working in the area of human rights. Make a list of five of the groups in America that are working for certain rights and identify these rights. Are they working for "new" rights, or to have existing civil rights laws enforced better? How are their efforts similar to or different from the efforts of America's Founding Fathers? What methods have they used? How effective have their efforts been so far?

  1. You might also try calling the local chapter of the NAACP to get some information.  Also maybe the local Veteran's Administration.  They usually have volunteer historians that are available to help.  I have a lot of high school homeschooling parents that have called upon them for help like this.  Also they LOVE the chance to work with young people.

Good luck!  Hope we were all able to help!

  2. Here are a couple links to human rights groups (all Amercian based)

    http://www.amnesty.org/

    http://shr.aaas.org/

    http://www.hinduamericanfoundation.org/m...

Hope it helps, good luck with your report.

  5. I would look under a internet search for groups for human rights in the United States. Go to the library and ask a librarian and they will give you a direction in which to look. There will be articles, one page, some more that gives you info. Also, college libraries are also good for this. Library online (your state) search for periodicals. Been there, done that!! not hard but u got to start somewhere. Even books in the back have bibliography of searches.
