My next lesson for my EFL students is on reported speech. I really just can't get my head around it. I have made some example sentences so I can study from them. Can someone complete them to show me how it works?

“I am leaving in half an hour.”

He said…

“The rain has stopped.”

You said…

“I had breakfast earlier”.

She said…

“Were you living in London in ’96?”

She asked...

“I have bought 3 pizzas”.

He said…

“Will you be coming back?”

She asked…

  1. “I am leaving in half an hour,” he said, picking up his case and making final adjustments to his diary.

“The rain has stopped,” you said to yourself, looking out of the window.

“I had breakfast earlier,” she said as she watched him prepare his toast.

“Were you living in London in ’96?” she asked him with interest.

“I have bought 3 pizzas” he said, thinking that it would be plenty.

“Will you be coming back?” she asked him tearfully.

    These are possible answers.

Notice that you need to make the sentence continue after the quotation marks.

Read a book with recorded speech to get more used to possible formats.

  2. 1. He said that (that is optional) he was (am changed to was) leaving in half an hour. (quotation marks removed)

    2. You said that the rain had (change has to had) stopped.

    3. She said that she had breakfast before then (I feel we could use earlier also)

    4. She asked if you were living in London in 96. (the subject/ verb order changes)

    5. He said that he had (has changed to had) bought 3 pizzas.

    6. She asked if you would (will changed to would and subject/verb order changes too) be coming back.
