Reports: Indianapolis Colts closer to sign deal with QB Andrew Luck – NFL News
The Indianapolis Colts are tipped to be closer to land a deal to their star rookie quarterback, Andrew Luck, in the near future, without any confirmation of exact date of their expected signing of the contract.
A section of media has laid the latest claim of the deal signing, even though there is nothing much new revelation in the report.
Again, it is down to assurances of the owner, Jim Irsay, who has been giving them all along since arrival of the rookie in Indianapolis: that they are trying to hammer out a deal for the QB at earliest.
Jim, who is one of the most committed National Football League (NFL) users of Twitter, has hinted in his tweets, not cited in the media report, that both sides are almost done on the deal matter and expect to sign it well before the training
camp this month.
Colts are due to open their training camp later this month and under the NFL’s rules, a rookie has to be under contract to qualify for attending the training camp of his team.
Apart from the controversy around some differences on the endorsement rights of the player, which was recently reported between the stakeholders, rest of the deal matters appear settled.
Thanks to the league’s rookie rules in the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA), guidelines about the payout on the rookies’ deals and other terms are very much clear.
There seems to be no other reason for further delaying signing of the deal by the parties and if the latest report is true, it looks that Andrew should get a contract by end of this week at earliest and next week at the latest.
Luck himself said to be focused on his game more than anything else. This includes his contract from Colts. He said he has authorised his agent to take care of the deal and other matters while he himself has resigned to focus the game.
The rookie, who had to head back to his college to finish remaining courses on his degree, a mandatory requirement under the league’s rules, has missed the organised team activities and mandatory three-day minicamp. He is trying to make
up for the lost time now.
