Reports: QB Brandon Weeden takes snaps on starting line for Cleveland Browns -NFL news
Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback, Brandon Weeden, could get the starting role in near future as he is reportedly taking snaps on the starting line.
Browns are currently through to organised team activities (OTAs), kicked off on last Tuesday, and the incumbent QB, Colt McCoy, had an opportunity in the opening week to take snaps on the starting line.
The session was opened for media and commentators to write and comment on the workout and training.
It was Weeden’s turn to take snaps this week, and although the session was not open for coverage by media, a number of media sections have put together pieces of information to confirm that the rookie was allowed to take snaps on the position.
Almost all commentators and beat reporters note from whatever information is available that now it is matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ that Weeden is given the top role.
The punters do not see it as a shocking development, saying he has already been backed by the team to compete for the position.
Browns’ general manager, Tom Heckert, in one of his earlier remarks said that the team does not give anything to anyone straightaway.
He apparently suggested that the rookie will have to compete with the incumbent QB for the role.
Despite being rated as a player of rich talent and skills, Weeden must prove the qualities on the field before winning the role.
His form is also crucial to the future of McCoy. In case of Weeden’s success on the starting role, McCoy’s stay in Cleveland might be over.
The player has remained in a phase of uncertainty about his future with Browns. He has been in the news of being released and retained most recently.
It is expected the entire situation should be clear for the player by end of the OTAs. He must be able to observe his standing with Weeden beside him.
While the team is aware of McCoy’s talent and skills, their decision is also down to the performance of the rookie. If he fails on the starting line, McCoy should be able to retain his position in the team.
