Reports link DE Mario Williams’ visit to Buffalo to potential signing by Bills-NFL News
Free agent defensive end, Mario Williams, has lately been linked to the possibility of signing with Buffalo Bills in near future.
Williams’ move to Bills was speculated following his visit to the team’s headquarters and his talk with general manager, Buddy Nix, as seen in a photo, released by the management in response to some media queries.
His visit came soon after becoming the free agent on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, following Houston Texans’ refusal to offer him a new deal.
Williams’ signing must come as good news for the local fans who apparently have become frustrated with the poor form of their team.
Some sections of media have earlier revealed that Bills were holding silent desire to pursue the player’s signing to improve themselves at pass rush position.
This could be true due to the fact that the GM, along with defensive co-ordinator, Dave Wannstedt, had flown to North Carolina in a private jet to facilitate the DE’s arrival.
Although nothing has come out of the discussion between the two parties, it is perceived that the first round of talks was an informal one, where the player was taken to tour the team’s facilities, as depicted in the photo.
The possibility of reaching a deal immediately has also been discarded at the moment given that the player is reportedly planning to visit another team, and could possibly come back to Buffalo to extend the negotiations.
Some reports have quoted people privy to the process to be optimistic about agreement between both parties in near future.
Yet a number of football commentators believe that Williams’ signing would not be as easy for Bills because the player deserves a hefty amount in the contract due to his stature in the market.
However, Bills’ chief executive officer (CEO), Russ Brandon, is not worried about money when it comes to signing players like Williams.
Brandon said:
"We plan to be aggressive in free agency, and resources will not be an issue."
Williams played for six successive years with Texans and remained atop of their defence performance.
Unfortunately, the player was hit with a number of injuries during last couple of years and went down in the form to some extent.
It could be the possible reason that Texans did not want his stay extended and therefore refrained from offering him a new deal.
Consequently, he has become available in the free agency market, exploring better prospects elsewhere in the league.
