Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner sets the pace in Silverstone free practice two – MotoGP news
Repsol Honda rider Casey stoner was able to top the time charts for the second time in the Friday free practice sessions of the AirAsia British MotoGP event of the 2011 season.
The session started amidst wet conditions as some brief showers hit the track just before the proceedings could take place.
Although Stoner’s fastest time in FP2 was slower than his time in the first session, yet no other driver was able to wind up the margin against the Aussie driver.
Stoner was happy with his performance in the Friday practice sessions as he topped both sessions and hoped to clinch some important points on Sunday against Jorge Lorenzo.
The Aussie driver said, “I know I could take the championship lead this weekend but it is not the end of the world if I don't.”
Further talking about the Friday session, Stoner said, “The bike felt pretty good but we struggled with the tyres at times as the temperature was so low. But that is racing in England for you and we have to get on with it.”
Stoner did a fastest lap time of 2 minutes and 15.666 seconds which was a clear 0.797 seconds fastest from the second fastest driver of the FP2, Marco Simoncelli of Gresini Honda.
Simoncelli was able to post a fastest time of 2 minutes and 16.463 seconds in the final moments of the session when the track slightly dried out.
The third fastest time went to Nicky Hayden of Ducati as he posted a time of 2 minutes and 17.070 seconds. However, his teammate Valentino Rossi was 9th on the final standings almost four seconds adrift.
Homeboy Carl Crutchlow was able to bring out something special for his crowd as he went fastest in the early moments of the session but as the track warmed up, he found himself down to fourth place almost three seconds adrift of the leader.
Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso, Ben Spies, Karel Abraham and Tony Elias completed the top ten.
The final practice session and the qualifiers will follow on Saturday, June 11, 2011 before the race begins on Sunday.
