Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner wins AirAsia British Grand Prix - MotoGP news
Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner has won the AirAsia British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit, clinching his third successive win in the 2011 MotoGP season.
It is the first consecutive win for HRC since Valentino Rossi did it in 2003. The race was held on wet tarmac under slight downpour which slowed the pace significantly.
Casey Stoner showed staggering performance in wet weather and overlapped Randy de Puniet. Both Repsol Honda riders Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso stood first and second on the podium respectively. Despite of his recent injury and hurting ribs, Monster
Yamaha Tech3 rider, Colin Edwards earned the third place on podium and his first of the 2011 season.
The initial race lead was taken by Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo but shortly Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso made a swift move over his teammate Casey Stoner and hopped to second place. After some time, he conquered the first place overtaking
Jorge Lorenzo.
Casey Stoner also made his impressive move on wet tarmac and crossed Jorge Lorenzo who dropped to second place after Dovizioso. With Stoner’s move, Jorge Lorenzo dropped to third and the race saw Dovizioso at first place followed by teammate Casey Stoner
in second place.
After some more laps, Casey Stoner earned back his lead and dropped Andrea Dovizioso to second place.
San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli was riding fourth from the start. With a position battle ahead, Simoncelli availed the opportunity and passed Jorge Lorenzo covering the third place behind Repsol Honda duo, Stoner and Dovizioso. The top three
spots were covered by RCV. Soon after a few laps, Marco Simoncelli ran wide into the corner after a slip up and left the spot empty for Jorge Lorenzo. Simoncelli was unhurt in the incident but he had to settle for a fourth place behind the defending world
champion.
Meanwhile the mid pack saw Ben Spies falling down and damaging his Factory M1 massively. As a result, the American had to retire from the British GP. Following the Spies crash, his teammate Jorge Lorenzo also had a fall while he was pushing to overtake Dovizioso.
Though Lorenzo was unharmed but he retired from the race and collected his first 'did not finish' status of the season.
