Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner wins Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya to take third victory of 2011
Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner scored his third victory of the ongoing 2011 season by winning the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya in Barcelona on Sunday, June 5, 2011.
This is the Australian rider’s 26th victory in premier class. After the win, Stoner said, “We got a reasonably good start but not as good as Jorge. I wanted to try to pass him early on but had to wait until the end of the first lap. From this
point I just tried to put in the consistent laps as we did in the practice sessions to see if he could stay with me, fortunately I was able to open up an advantage without pushing too hard or feeling too much pressure.”
Despite of his second place start at the Montmelo circuit, he was able to snatch the lead from Jorge Lorenzo in the second corner of the first lap and thereafter he was unbeatable throughout the race. The pole sitter San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli
was dropped to sixth place during the corner mix.
Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo took the lead in the beginning after starting from third place on the grid.
Lorenzo’s teammate Ben Spies was fourth to start the race but soon he climbed to third place and got stuck behind his teammate until the finish line. Spies earned his first podium finish with the Yamaha factory team after moving from Tech3.
After the top three riders, three Italians were entangled in the fight for fourth place. Ducati team rider Valentino Rossi was riding in the fourth place but shortly was overtaken by Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso who kept his place until the end.
Rossi finished fifth in the race ahead of pole winner San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli in sixth place.
Monster Yamaha Tech3 rider Cal Crutchlow was able to finish seventh ahead of Ducati Team rider Nicky Hayden.
