Repsol has lived for 40 years in the motorcycle racing world: MotoGP News
The Spanish energy company, Respol, has completed their four decades in the Motorcycling World Championship. Over the span it has collected 25 titles across all the categories.
Repsol has been into sports world as a strong sponsor since 1969. After passing two years by backing sports' sponsorship they entered the two-wheel racing world.
The prominent riders of the Repsol family are Angel Nieto, Jorge Martinez ‘Aspar’, Sito Pons, Alex Criville, Emilio Alzamora, Mick Doohan, Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez, who earned the name in two-wheels racing. These names belong from Spain
and other countries too.
Some of these riders still share the joy with Repsol and are an integral part of their racing family. The sports pedigree is written in over 40 years and in the history of MotoGP is known to be the longest living sponsor in the field.
All the charm started when a young rider, Angel Nieto, first time ever wore an ‘R’ on the fairing of his Derbi machine, about 40 years ago in 1971 at the track of Austria, Salzburgring, where the season opener round took place. From that day onwards Repsol’s
unbeatable race track history started and continued. The young rider took two podium finishes on a single day. A second place on podium in the 50cc class and first place finish in 125cc category. In that season Nieto took his first title in 125cc and became
runner-up in the smaller category. This was a successful start for Repsol, from that season the company began its motorcycling sponsorship in the competitions.
The first two racers to wear the Repesa logo were rally drivers Alberto Ruiz Gimenez, Eladio Doncel and Jose Manuel Lencina, who in 1969 competed in the championship with Lancia and Alfa Romeo cars. The original designs wore by Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso
used at the Valencia Grand Prix of 2008 is still alive and used in the Classic Teams cars.
The day when the young Angel Nieto made his debut run with the energy company, the Repsol riders have played in the spot-light of the racing world.
