Have any of you for real ever had your bearded dragons die from impactment while using calcium sand? Are you positive it died in result of the sand and not anything else? please do not lie, I know sand has a bad name, but all the ones I have ever raised never died of anything other than old age

  1. I have never experienced it myself, but my daughter volunteers at a local reptile rescue center and the owner has seen it happen.  He gets a lot of lizards that were previously kept on sand and the owners bring them in because they don't know how to deal with the impaction.  While it's true that bearded dragons live on sand in the wild, it's not known how many of them die from impaction.  It's also not exactly the same..in the wild, the sand is hard and compacted together.  Less chance of ingesting it.

  2. no? I use sand in my lizards cage and he doesn't have a problem with it. He gets mad if I try changing it to something else. I mix calcium sand with regular sand after i sift through it. I honestly don't think your lizard would die because of the sand unless he is from a none sandy place.

  3. I have had 2 die from it. We saw it in the X-rays but did not have time to fix before they died. After the second died we stopped using the calcium sand and switched to repti carpet. They really dont always live near sand. more of a rocky area with maybe a little sand but not much.

when they are in the wild ingest very little sand so there was never a danger of impaction. The problem with calcium san is it sticks together when wet. So when they get older you can use washed playsand but never calcium sand.
