He merely adopted it from other systems that used kyu and dan ranks. Though he was of the first to equate it to Martial Arts.

However, yes he was the first to use Belt or Obi colors to denote rank, and the first to literally invent the blackbelt to denote Dan ranking.

But the general ranking system came from Go!

So yes in a sense he invented the Black Belt system (as in different colored belts) but the ranking system the kyu and dan system, came from Go!.
