What does the question mean in laymen's terms:

How does Washington's writing voice distinguish his upbringing from middle-class conceptions of childhood? Do you think that his observations about identity are relevant today?

Try this technique when faced with a problem that has More meaning than words.

1) break down the sentence(s) to find the main subject.  In this case.  Washington's writing voice + upbringing (raised by his parents, etc...) + middle-class conceptions(thoughts, opinions, prejudices, etc...) about childhood.  Is what he thought still applicable today.  Don't forget to tell why it is or is not.   Good luck.

how does the way he writes make it obvious that he was not from a middle class up-bringing.  do you think that the observations he makes about identity ( pride, accomplishment, values, morals etc) make sense in the world and time-period of today?
