Question:

Required connection for upconverting DVD?

Do you have to use a certain connection, like HDMI, for an upconvert DVD player to display at the highest resolution? Or, is it possible to use component?

I'm asking because I have an older, 1080i set that only has DVI, component, S video, and composite. (Yes, there were 1080i sets like this about 6 years ago. It's a monstrous CRT monitor, but the picture, even without 1080P, will rival anything new in this size range.) The DVI connection is supposedly HDMI compatible, but I don't really want to invest in adapters...

  1. via Hdmi is the only way that will work, you tv needs to be hdmi compatible as well.

  2. Look in the manual for the Player to see if you can get 1080i over component. If you can that would be the best way to go over buying an adapter to make the flawed HDMI connection work.

If you provide a model number for both the research can be done for you.

  3. You need to find out if your DVI connection on your TV is HDCP compliant. Many are! Your owner's manual should tell you.

If it is, use HDMI out of your player into the TV with an HDMI/DVI converter (radio shack item) and send your audio through coaxial digital (orange connectors) or optical (square black connectors) to your TV.

Your Y, pr, pb component video will not upconvert so your best resolution will be 480 x 720.
