Requirements for a Backup Dancer?

OK, well I am doing Ballet Classes now, and I want to be a backup dancer sometime in my life. What kind of classes should I take (ballet,jazz, ect.)And how long?

  1. Dancers who get "Backup Dancer" gigs are highly trained, versatile dancers who have studied all areas of dance while perhaps focusing their training in jazz and hip-hop. You don't succeed by setting a goal of being a backup dancer; you succeed by aiming to be an employable (meaning one who gets selected at auditions) professional dancer.

    Aspiring pre-professional dance students (in any style) need to be taking at least 12-15 hours of dance classes a week during their high school years (not counting rehearsals), rising to at least 20 hours a week over the summer and after graduation. As for how many years you'll need, the answer is "as many as possible" because there will always be dancers out there with more years of training than you who  will beat you out in auditions. But the more you train and participate in auditions, the better you'll get.
