Question:

Requirements for teaching....Please advise.?

I am researching the requirements for teaching but web sights don't give all the answers that I need. I'm interested in the Early Childhood Program (Pre-K-3rd). I already hold a Master's Degree in Mental and Behavioral Health (Counseling) and my undergrad was in Psychology. Does this change the standard requirements for a teaching degree? Would I enter for a B.S. or go straight into a M.A.'s program? Does the curriculum change due to the education I have currently?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  1. With a degree all you need is certification.  Look into an alternative cert. program.  They probably only have these where there are teacher shortages, though.  Otherwise, they have 'certification only' plans at Universities.  Good luck to you.

  2. You have to get a multiple subject teaching credential. You do not have to go back for any different undergrad. Everything that they require of a teacher candidate is in the credential program. Go talk to a counselor at your local university about the program. There are usually a few options for length, but it will take you at least one year to get your credential. The credential is not a M.A. program, unless you opt to go into a duel program. Your previous degrees will not change the requirements the state expects from you either.
