  1. Uh oh...

You may encounter many problems if you are planning to cross the border in a rental car as some rental companies will not allow renters to drive their rental cars across the border. I would advise you to check with the rental company before you rent a car.

According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas... Japanese citizens do not require a visa to visit Canada. However, your friend will need a passport.

    Good luck

  2. Citizens of Japan just need their passport to enter Canada.  NO visa.

Traveling this year by car you as a US citizen don't need a passport.  But you have one so it makes sense to use it.

  3. As a US citizen , you need a passport if you are flying but not if you're driving. Don't know about your friend but he'll have a passport with him anyway. Holiday visitors don't usually need visas. I always bring a passport when crossing the border whether they say I need it or not.
