  1. I have investigated the requirements for a local air ambulance company; they are pretty close as follows:

You must have a Commercial Rotary Pilot's certificate with an instrument rating. You then must have at least 1,000 hrs of time and some (I'm not sure how much) turbine time.

To get the ratings, you will have to find a helicopter instruction school. (And they are expensive, those ratings along with an Instructor rating will generally run you in excess of $50,000, closer to $70,000 probably). You want the Instructor's rating in order to build up the hours you will need because once you obtain the Commercial/Instrument ratings, you won't have enough hours to qualify for the job so you can work as an instructor to build your time.

You can get student loans for these. Just be aware that although you can start taking lessons at any time, you have to be 16 to solo and 17 to obtain your license and probably 18 to obtain a student loan. I don't believe the local company was requiring any particular education beyond a high school diploma, just the required ratings.

  2. LA County Fire uses blackhawk helicopters. Here are their requirements.

You can go to the link below and look at other EMS jobs and requirements

    http://www.justhelicopters.com/employmen...

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is offering a career-opportunity to professional helicopter pilots who possess a valid commercial pilot's certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration with a rotorcraft-helicopter rating and a valid Class 2 FAA Aviation Medical Certificate. Candidates must have four thousand (4,000) logged hours of flying time in helicopters as Pilot in Command, including experience in power-off auto rotational landings. Fifteen hundred (1,500) logged hours of this time must have been flown in mountainous terrain at pressure altitudes of over four thousand (4,000) feet on map survey work, power line patrol/construction work, fire control work, search and rescue work, emergency medical services work, or similar assignments requiring take offs and landings with maximum loads on unimproved landing areas under adverse weather conditions.

    Desirable Qualifications

Experience as Pilot in Command in operations in Class "B" Airspace, i.e. SFO and LAX.

Experience as a Pilot in Command in the Bell 212/412 series helicopter and/or the Sikorsky H-60/S-70 series helicopter.

A minimum of two hundred and fifty (250) logged hours of flying time as Pilot in Command during night Visual Flight Rules conditions.

Successful completion of either a factory or military initial course on a multi-engine helicopter.

Applicants are invited to apply and must possess a valid Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) or Commercial Pilot Certificate with a Rotorcraft/Helicopter Rating issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) AND a Class "2" FAA Aviation Medical Certificate. All certifications must be submitted at the time of filing.

A valid Driver License is required to perform job related essential functions. A copy of your Driver License must be submitted prior to the start of employment.

  3. The only Trauma Hawk I know of is a slang expression for the Piper PA-38 Tomahawk, which is a small fixed wing, two-seat trainer.

It got the nickname "traumahawk" because of it's rather extreme stall behavior.
