  1. You will need to check with the show you plan to ride at for their rules.  Since this is not an "official" race like pole bending or barrels, it will differ from show to show.  We call it the Pick-up race where I live.  One rider runs the horse to the other end of the arena where the rider to be picked up swings up behind the first rider and they run back.  Our only rule is that the second rider must mount behind a barrel set up at the far end of the arena, and they have to be astride the horse when they cross the finish line.  The fastest times are as long as it takes to run the length of the arena and back - usually about 7-8 seconds.  The really good competitors don't even slow down, but just turn the barrel like it was flags and keep on running, while the one picked up grabs the saddle horn and swings up.

  2. once you get good, the horse won't have to stop to pick you up- the momentum will pick you up. a tip for your friend is to put her arm behind her back, to help you up. rules: no backing up, no going out of your lane, one knee must be past the spine to stay clean (like if you are falling/ sliding off, your knee must still be on the other side of the spine), probably easiest to hold on to the cantle instead of your friend. PRACTICE A LOT!!! first try the slow and easy way- use a stirrup, hold onto the horn, and your friend's hand. then once you've got that down, try to get up without having the horse stop... use the momentum to help pull you up along with grabbing the horn and your friend's hand.

record times will probably be just like in stake race or int'l flag- probably 7.9- the low 9s.

look at youtube videos... might help some.
