Question:

Rescued Fish?

So my husband and I rescued all the corydoras from WalMart yesterday. All 14 of them. 3 of them are in the hospital tank because of severe fin rot. The others have a bit of tattered fin. It's not terribly bad, there is one with a tattered dorsal and another has a bit of tail missing. But everyone else is happy and healthy. I put aquarium salt in and some stress coat.

Do you think I should get an antibiotic too? If so which one? I've used Jungle Parasite Clear tablets on my fantail's fin rot and it worked. But now after reading up on tail rot it can also be a fungus. So is there a general antibiotic that works for all or am I going to have to get two medicines?

  1. i would just go with the one you have right know.If it does not helps after 2 or 3 month's at all.Buy another medicine that helps with fungi's.Then they should all be healthy soon.

  2. That's why I don't even look at the fish section at walmart anymore, so sad isn't it?  They really should get out of the live fish business and stick to other cr*p...And sadly, they'll have all 14 of them replaced within a few days.  I know it doesn't necessarily help, but I suggest firing off an email to their HQ about their atrocious fish keeping abilities.  I did that a few years ago, they forward it to the store manager then, he/she will call then tell them how bad they suck at keeping fish.  Everybody should do that, then maybe they'll stop selling fish.

Fungus would show up as a secondary infection to it, but it may not even show up at all.  So, no need for a fungus med.  I would suggest picking up an antibiotic for the ones with severe fin rot, Maracyn Two would be good.  Most freshwater fish bacterial infections are gram negative, which is what Maracyn Two treats. Or go with a broad spectrum antibiotic.  Don't recall off hand which ones are broad spectrum though, but I just go with Maracyn Two or tetracycline because that seems to be the most common one available-from what I've seen anyway.

The others that aren't as bad, just keep the water quality good and they should do fine.  Watch the salt with cories as well, they are salt sensitive but should do ok with a short term treatment.
