Question:

Research & Development Career in Industry?

I currently work in a scientific area; however, the work is more production type work and is rather routine.

I've been offered an opportunity to step into a research position within the same company, and I'm trying to evaluate whether I should take it or not.

My question to anyone who has done R&D in industry (not academia): How do you manage the fact that your work may be open ended (not sure if what you're doing has the answer people might like)? And how do you monitor your progress with a position like this one (status reports, etc...)

Just any information that someone could provide about the day to day experiences (ups and downs) of having a R&D position in industry would be helpful.

Thanks!
