  1. -Discovered in 1868 by

    -French astronomer Pierre Janssen

-He detected an unknown yellow spectral line in light from a solar eclipse.

-Since then large reserves of helium have been found in the natural gas fields of the US, which is by far the largest supplier of this gas.

    -No colour/taste/smell

    -Non toxic

-Mono-atomic gas, has no stable compounds in normal conditions (noble gas).

-Has VERY low boiling and melting t.

-It's used as a mixture with Oxygen (instead of Nitrogen) for deep-diving equipment, since Nitrogen causes decompression sickness, and pure oxygen is toxic for lungs.

Since it's lighter than air it's used for baloons (an modern Zepelin airships, older ones used Hydrogen which is inflamable).

It's used for cooling of superconductors.

One can temporarely change the quality of one's voice by inhaling it a bit (it's fun!).
