Question:

Research Project?

Okay, so I have this year long project, like an extended science project basically (but a lot more difficult), during my senior year of high school and I was supposed to start like.. now. But of course I procrastinate, not to mention I've no idea what project to do. For starters, I'm an engineering major so obviously I have to stay within that field. Now my question for all you engineering people, what kind of project would you recommend? I know I'm not being specific on what kind of engineering because it can be anything (electrical, acoustical, architectural, blahblah). Also, I'm stupid when it comes to coming up with good ideas. So what kind of project idea would you give a starter? It can be anything as long as it has a purpose. Help is immensely appreciated !!!!

  1. How about designing your own power inverter?

  2. 1) Contact an alien civilisation.

    2) Build a working fusion power reactor

    3) Build a working fision power reactor

    4) Modify a banjo so it plays in tune (WARNING: This is a LOT more difficult than the first three!)

  3. Why not look into alternative energy sources?  Consider ethanol generation from cellulose (grass, paper, bark, wood pulp).  Consider the production methods necessary, the costs of raw materials, the release of materials (CO2, unprocessed materials, et al), and the actual energy output possible.  Try some of the experimental means, like growth of algae which could be later harvested for oil.  Many of the materials should be relatively cheap and just take time to grow, process and characterize.
