My family is having a Korean exchange student stay at our home for the '08/'09 school year. He speaks little english so we'll have to teach him some. Any advice of where to find ANY research for him? He's 15 and coming in 3 weeks. Also, any advice to learning basic Korean?

  1. I would suggest visiting/calling the foreign language department in your nearest community college/university to ask them for any advice.

Also, it is not your job to learn Korean, but his to learn English.

As with learning any language:  Listen more, practice... repeat... over and over and over.

There should be a foreign student's affair department in most colleges where you/him will be able to get any help, or answer to your/his questions.

    good luck.

  2. pictures. we had one from Japan who spoke limited English and if he didn't understand something, we either found him a picture, drew him one, did charades... you get the idea. they want to know what you say, but it may take a little effort! Have fun and learn a lot! foreign exchange can be a blast!

  3. You can't really learn just basic Korean but the grammatical structure is complex, like American. Just use sign language and pictures. It can be difficult at first, but you'll catch on. Also, if you have a Korean church nearby, encourage him to go (if he's religious) because he will probably feel frustrated, not being able to communicate efficiently with anyone around him. I know some Koreans who have lived in America basically all their life, but when they eat too much American food, they get sick. Be prepared to find out where the nearest Korean/Asian marts are.
