  2. King Henry VIII had six wives and three legitmiate children:

    1. Catherine of Aragon (16 December 1485 – 7 January 1536). She was the Infanta of Spain, wife to his older brother Prince Arthur. She married Prince Henry (Henry VIII) in 1509 and they divorced in 1533. The marriage seems to have been a happy one until Henry became seriously worried about getting a male heir to his throne as she approached menopause. Her first child, a daughter, was stillborn on 31 January 1510. Prince Henry, Duke of Cornwall was born on 1 January 1511, but died after 52 days (22 February). In November 1513, Catherine had another son called Henry, but he only lived a few hours, followed by a stillborn daughter on December 1514. On February 18, 1516 at the Palace of Placentia in Greenwich, London, she gave birth to a daughter named Mary (later Queen Mary I of England). Her final pregnancy ended with a stillborn daughter on 10 November 1518.

    2. Anne Boleyn (1501/1507 – 19 May 1536). She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine. She married King Henry in 1533 and was executed in 1536 for treason, adultery and witchcraft. Given the circumstances of her marriage and Henry's desperate desire for a son, it was estimate that she had as many as six pregnancies, three of which ended in miscarriages so early into term that the pregnancies were never widely known and the children's s*x could not be determined. Reliable sources attest only the birth of Elizabeth in September 1533, a miscarriage in the summer of 1534, and the miscarriage of a male fetus, of about four and one-half months' gestation, in January 1536.

    3. Jane Seymour (1507/1508 – 24 October 1537). She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine and later to Anne Boleyn. She married King Henry in 1536 and died in 1537. She died of post-natal complications following the birth of her only child, Edward VI. She was also King Henry VIII's fifth cousin three times removed.

    4. Anne of Cleves (22 September 1515 – 16 July 1557). She was a German aristocrat of Duchy of Cleves. She married King Henry in 1540 Jan and dirvoced in July in the same year. Without the benefit of an advance portrait to prepare her for Henry's appearance, she did not realise that 'this man' was to be her future husband, so she did not curtsey - or even rise from her chair - when Henry entered the room. The king took an immediate dislike to her because of it and announced: "I like her not." They had no issue.

    5. Kathryn Howard (between 1520 and 1525 – 13 February 1542). She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne of Cleves. She married King Henry in 1540 and was executed in 1542 for treason and adultery. She was a distant cousin to Anne Boleyn through her mother's side. When Henry had his marriage to Anne annulled on July 9, 1540, rumours swirled that Catherine was pregnant with his child. Their quick marriage just a few weeks after the divorce from Anne, on July 28th, 1540, reflected Henry's lifelong urgency to secure the Tudor succession by begetting healthy sons. She was not pregnant upon marriage, and became repulsed by her husband's grotesque body.

    6. Catherine Parr (1512 – 5 September 1548). She was a rich widow who was married twice before her marriage to King Henry in 1543. It was in Mary's (daughter of Henry) household that Catherine later caught the attention of the king. She married King Henry in 1543  and became a widow in 1547 with no issue. She later on married her lover Thomas Seymour and died in 1547.
