Resident Evil brand under grave threat as Capcom messes up yet again
It sure is not the best time to be a fan of the Resident Evil franchise as the maker of the once popular horror survival third-person shooter seems to have fallen into a deep hole, enveloped in both darkness and confusion.
Capcom has an extremely talented team of developers; there is absolutely no argument over that. One simply needs to take a look at Street Fighter 4 or the Devil May Cry franchise to realise that it really knows its way around the industry and into the hearts
of gamers.
However, it is hard to not feel perplexed after looking at what the company has done with a franchise that was once considered to be among the best third-person shooters.
While the second title in the franchise originally released for PlayStation One is one of the most critically acclaimed titles in the history of video games, its successors failed to do justice to the brands reputation and forced gamers to settle for a compromise.
The latest title in the franchise, Resident Evil 6, was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 2.
The bad times continued for the brand as the game failed to attract positive reviews from the critics.
Reviews of the game pointed out a number of good things, but also underscored plenty of alleged flaws in the game.
These issues ranged from frustrating camera angles to plenty of quick-time events, something that did not go down too well with the fans of the franchise.
Despite all this, Capcom is still hopeful that the latest offering will garner success.
During a question and answer session, the publisher stated said that it is still too soon to write the game off as a failure as it was successful to some degree.
The company pointed out that Resident Evil 6 had made record $4.5 million sales, which was an accomplishment in itself.
“Resident Evil 6 continues to generate repeat sales in Japan and overseas. Furthermore, initial shipments set a new record for a Capcom title. So this game has been successful to some degree,” reads a line from the response during the session.
Capcom further went on to state during the session that it expected the sales figure to improve even more with the holiday season just around the corner.
The publisher noted that its development team had shown a lot of commitment during the developing of the game, going deep into the details with the intended motivation of making everything as close to perfect as possible.
The feedback and suggestions of the fans of the franchise were also taken into consideration while working on the sixth title in the Resident Evil franchise.
Capcom sure has a lot of things to think about and fast because the gamers have become even more unforgiving in recent times. The recent Resident Evil games have damaged the reputation of the brand significantly and it seems hardly unlikely that it will
be given plenty of more chances to try getting back to its former glory.
It is time for them to hit the drawing board and start putting a greater effort in realising what they have done wrong in recent years and try to make amends to give fans of the franchise the sort of game that is being demanded instead of trying out too
many new things in desperation.
