Question:

Resident of California, purchase of vehicle in Wisconsin?

There is a motorcycle on e-bay that the seller (a business) says I must pay Wisconsin sales tax on the purchase, regardless of which state I live in. I live in California. Do I have to pay them sales tax? Will they pass it on to California? What will happen when I go to register the vehicle in my state?? Thanks, Larry

  1. When you register the motorcycle in CA, use tax will be due on your purchase price. You will be able to get a credit for any sales tax you paid to another state up to the amount of CA tax due (It's called a 6406 credit)

Be sure to bring in your receipt showing the tax paid and you should have no problem receiving the credit.

  2. Assume you pay tax on both states.

    Definitely your residence state--Cali.

If you are spared Wisky sales tax, so be it.
