  7. It is important in any letter of resignation, to be dignified and courteous, as well as having a good sense of humour.  Having written many letters of resignation, I consider myself quite an expert.  One tact which might cause a laugh or two, is to have about 5 or 6 in your pocket when you hand one to your line manager.

When he/she says that they cannot accept that, get out another one which they cannot accept.

Working out what they cannot accept within the context of a letter of resignation, is important in understanding the importance of the "letter" of resignation.

It is important because they cannot accept a resignation, unless it is in writing.  So your first step is to offer your resignation verbally.  When they say they need it in writing, bring out the first letter which they cannot accept as it will have a fundamental flaw in it.  (like no signature or pp'd from one of your mates)

Then on the next letter, write 4 or 5 pages, and on the final page say that your resignation is contingent on acceptance of your discussion regarding constructive dismissal.

On the third letter, say that a copy of this letter will be handed to prospective employers as a reference.  Furthermore, you would need it in writing that this was not a formal resignation letter.

In the final letter, write it by hand and make the handwriting completely illegible.

Then after all the letters have been read, and they still will not accept your resignation, throw your hands up in the air and say "Well what about a rise then"

  9. Keep it short and simple.  Don't burn any bridges because you may never know who you will cross in the future.  Take a look at former president Richard Nixon's resignation letter.
