Question:

Resignation time period.?

I gave my resignation letter to my boss, last week. Put it on his desk Wed and we talked about it Thursday. I had not included a time frame in the letter, but when we talked I said I would give him three weeks. (I was feeling guilty). However I have only worked here two months the first month only part time. I really want to make next Friday my last day so it would actually be 2 1/2 weeks compared to the three weeks we verbally talked about. What do you think. I am not trying to ever work here again so I am not to concerned about burning bridges. I just feel guilty about going back on my word.

  1. You're not going back on you're word, just changing the date. You could have just not showed up and let them figure it out. You acted professionally you owe them nothing more. It happens.

  2. You would be wise to make your intentions known as quickly as possible, just out of consideration to your boss, regardless of whether you work there again or not. It's a small world, and word just might get around. Do the right thing and you won't have to worry about this.

  3. Handle it honestly. Just tell the boss that things have changed and that rather than leave on x*x, your last day will be YYY. Try to keep it within the accepted 2 weeks notice.
