Resilient Park racks up Vare Trophy, LPGA money title
South Korean Inbee Park might have failed to clinch a victory at the season-ending CME Group Titleholders 2012, but she managed to rack up the 2012 Vare Trophy thanks to low scoring and top
position in officials money list.
Park was more than thrilled after winning the accolade at the end of the CME Group Titleholders 2012, but she failed to win the Rolex Player of the Year.
American Stacy Lewis, with the help most top-10 finishes and four victories in the season, managed to secure the top spot in the Rolex Player of the Year award list.
Lewis could have beaten Park both in the low scoring and money list too, but posting a total score of 288 in Florida pushed her way from the title.
On the other hand, Park did much better against rivals, as she fired an overall 282 to take a share of the 11th position on the leaderboard. Although a victory seemed difficult
right from the first round on Thursday as she posted a 70, Park’s performance remained almost stable in all four rounds.
Speaking to the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour at the end of the final round on Sunday, Park said that she knew that she would be able to win the Vare Trophy, as she was
in a much better position than Lewis.
“I mean, it means a lot. We had a tight race until the last tournament and the last round. I had to put a lot of pressure on myself this week and it was really hard,” said the 24-year-old
golfer who is set to enter into the next season with a renewed passion.
“This week felt like it was longer than the whole season. I'm really happy that it's finally done and I got the title, really proud of myself, and this is the best year I've had”.
Park further said that it was an interesting battle throughout the season, giving her plenty of experience and confidence. Park won two LPGA titles in the season—something that gave her an
edge over most of the Asian contenders.
The 2012 money leader beat Australian Karrie Webb and Stacy Lewis at the Evian Masters in July. She then racked up her second season title at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 in October.
