Resistance 3 gets smarter AI and everyone’s favourite weapon gets toned down
The Resistance series is looking to make its already formidable AI more brutal and challenging than ever. Resistance: Fall of Man was a challenging experience in its own right, with swarms of enemies continuously trying to flank the player and the AI in
Resistance 2 only knew how to attack with devastating effect, the third game is looking to take things even further.
According to Cameron Christian, Resistance 3’s Senior Designer, the Chimera in the third instalment will be leagues above what the player encountered in previous games.
“I think the biggest thing we have going for us is our AI,” Cameron explained. “(They are) a lot more responsive and really aggressive. They will come after you. You might get a couple guys, but the other guys are going to hunt you down and find you.”
So it seems the majority of the work taking place on Resistance 3 is on the computer controlled AI, which by the sounds of what Insomniac Games are promising, seems justified.
While the multiplayer in the Resistance games was solid, boasting up to 60 player matches, the single player is where the game’s strength truly lay. If the improved AI can help bolster the already intense experience, then gamers should not have many issues.
There also seems to be a change of balance in terms of the firepower of some of the weapons in the game. However, it seems that the fan favourite, the Auger, which lets players both look and shoot through walls, has been toned down slightly.
“Every weapon is generally effective against anything, but there’s (varying) degrees of effectiveness. Let's talk about the Auger and that case with the Hulk fight, right? The Auger is going to be a bad choice, because there is no place for you to hide and
shoot through walls.”
However, the developers have compensated for this by balancing things out with other weapons in the game. Cameron explained that in certain situations, the Magnum would be just as effective as any other weapon, as every weapon would be effective in one scenario
or the other. So ultimately the game will not be decided on who has the better gun, but rather who has the right gun in the right situation.
Another bit of disappointing news for fans of the Auger is that Insomniac Games are planning to reduce the range it is able to see through walls, so players cannot pick off enemies in the distance.
All in all, the news seems encouraging, though fans of the Auger would most probably disagree, and one can only wait for the game’s release in September, later this year, to see if the move pays off.
